In this series of practical cooking classes, we will feature popular dishes from different asian countries that you can cook at home. As much as possible, we will use ingredients that can be easily obtained from the Shaw General Store or regular grocery stores in Eastsound or Friday Harbor.
In this class, we will learn the basics of how to make sushi rice and several different sushi fillings and turn them into maki rolls, hand rolls, rice balls and many other creative variations.
For this class, all food ingredients will be provided. However, class participants are requested to bring the following implements:
1. Cutting board
2. Large Chef's knife
3. Rice cooker (if you don't have one, then a heavy bottomed pot will do)
4. Clean kitchen towel
5. Wooden rice paddle or spatula
6. Large salad bowl (wooden is preferable, otherwise glass or metal will do)
7. A roll of Saran wrap or plastic food wrap
This event is sponsored and hosted by the Shaw Island Library and Historical Society.
About the Instructor: Ghim and his partner Robert have been residents on Shaw since 2020. He left the food paradise that was Singapore in 1991 for college in sunny California. Driven by gluttony and a passion for food, the self-taught home cook honed his cooking skills out of sheer desperation in order to savor the flavors of home.
