June 1, 2014 — Newsletter

The pace of island life seems to be picking up. Here are events in the next couple of weeks that you may want to attend.

Wednesday, June 4, 1 p.m.
The Catlin Gabel School returns to give an updated version of H.M.S. Pinafore at the Community Center. The students’ performances are always outstanding and not to be missed if you are on-island. Donations benefit Shaw Islanders, Inc.

Sunday, June 8, 2-5 p.m.
Come to an Open House at the Community Center to honor Shaw Island students who are graduating from high school or college. Congratulations to high school graduates Chloe Mason, T.J. Riggins, Amy Schmidt, Reyna Ellis, and Aine & Oona Foley. Our college graduates are Bonnie Schmidt and Karl Smith

Tuesday, June 10, 5 p.m.
Join the farewell party for the Woodards at Shaw Field. Call Jody Schmidt for details.

Friday, June 13, 6:30 p.m.
It’s always a special time when islanders can honor the graduates of Shaw School. Come to the Community Center for graduation ceremonies and the Spring Concert. Congratulations to Adam Bates, Thea Lengyel and Lily Woodard. Shaw Island is proud of you!

Saturday, June 14, 10 a.m.-Noon
It’s E-cycle Day. Bring your old electronics to the Community Center and I will take them away at no charge. Bring me your old computers, DVD players, TVs, phones, etc.

August 23
Save this date because Eric Smith and Friends will be back with their popular concert.

New Web site
Yes, islanders are working on a completely new Web site, including photographs. It will be a good place to check the calendar and other links for information about Shaw Island. Don’t worry, it is not designed to attract tourists!

Thank you to all who have voluntarily paid the suggested $220 per family fee. Any amount that you feel is right for you is appreciated. It takes a lot of money to have the recycling bin on Shaw.

Some clarification on recycling guidelines: Empty plastic bags of any size clog up the separating machine. Please empty all plastic bags and stuff them into one bag which you can put in the recycle bin.

No Styrofoam pellets, packaging, food containers or coolers. There is a place to recycle Styrofoam in Anacortes at 2201-37th Street by the bus barn. There is a dumpster where it can be deposited during the city’s open hours, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Information: 360-298-1921.

The Shaw Store
Good news! The newly remodeled Shaw Store is open again with an open look and a nice selection of items. Hours are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. every day. Welcome back!

Ping Pong, Anyone?
A ping pong table is being purchased for use at the community building. Call Doug Crosby for more details if you would like to participate in the action. Bring your own paddle.

Jon Shannon and Neil Bryant spent two days reconditioning the infield so that it will soon be ready for use. Many thanks to these two volunteers for maintaining Shaw Field.

New Trustee
Larry Walker has been elected by the Shaw Inc. board to finish out Ron Woodard’s term, which ends Dec. 31. Our thanks to Ron for 2½ years of generous service.
