July 2014

HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

The big July 4-5th celebration was a huge success with a parade that featured everything from Aerial Ariel to the pirates of the Blind Bay Yacht Club who won the Whittaker trophy for the 3rd year in a row. Chris Larson and friends prepared and served a fabulous picnic for all, followed by three softball games.

On Saturday the Community Center hummed with many activities from the Fish Pond, Farmers’ Market and lunch to the 50-item Raffle and the Dessert Auction.

The action continued with the Live Auction. Auctioneer Chris Hopkins who had us laughing at every turn with her quick humor. The unofficial total is approximately $17,000.  Many thanks to all of you who helped in some way. Old-timers and newcomers alike pitched in to make it a grand time.

A special thanks to those of you who donated items or services to the auction and to those of you who purchased them. It all goes to support the community building and Shaw Islanders, Inc.

SHAKESPEARE, SPEAKER, BOOKS, POST OFFICE

Sunday, July 13. Shakespeare on the Lawn. Stage Left presents “Twelfth Night.” The show starts at 8:15 p.m. Bring your own chair or blanket to sit on and dress warmly as it gets chilly after dark. Shaw Inc. pays them a stipend and your personal donations are also appreciated by Stage Left. A big thank you to Cy and Stephanie for hosting them, including dinner.

Saturday, July 19. The Shaw Island Library and Historical Society’s annual meeting includes a speaker and used-book sale. Also coming up is an important community meeting on the future of the Shaw Island Post Office. The date is July 31; time and information later.

ICE CREAM, ANNUAL MEETING, AUTHOR SPEAKS

Saturday, Aug. 9. Shaw Islanders, Inc.’s annual meeting (1-3 p.m.) has a special feature this year. This year, instead of committee reports to listen to, we are going to have an Ice Cream Social, complete with musical entertainment and door prizes.  As a not-for–profit corporation, we are required to have an annual meeting. There will be an official 10-minute meeting, and written reports will be available for you to take home. There will be an opportunity for discussion of any issue that you wish to bring before the Shaw Islanders, Inc. board.  Please submit reports to Diana Wisen at least one week before the meeting.

Saturday, Aug. 23. Two things for your enjoyment this day: A speaker in the afternoon, and then Eric Smith and his folksinger friends will present a family concert in the evening.

PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK

Shaw Islanders are doing a great job emptying the contents of their plastic bags into the recycle bin separately from the bag itself. Be extra careful about not putting food or half-empty bottles in because this time of year the yellow jackets and wasps will come to dine at the bin. If you have not made a payment to Shaw Inc. for recycling please consider doing so now.  It costs about $12,000 a year to have the bin here.  The suggested donation is $220 per household or whatever you feel appropriate for your family.

Welcome to those of you who renewed your membership or joined Shaw Islanders, Inc. over the July 4th holiday. It’s never too late to join and be a voting member of the community. Be sure to check out the new web site, www.shawislanders.org.  Now take a deep breath, check the contents of your freezer, and relax: Your company will be here soon!
